I’m not sure if this has made major news yet, but CompUSA isn’t doing well. I suppose a nicer person would wonder what this means for the employees, and where will they find jobs, and on and on… but I know that this means there’s going to be some hot sale action on the horizon.
I haven’t seen the list of stores getting the ax in any articles, but an astute co-worker noticed this evening that CompUSA’s store locator seems to list stores that are remaining open. For Michigan, that means Lansing. Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Novi, and Sterling Heights are out of here.
Call me crazy, but charging full retail and employing less-than-educated employees is probably not a very good business model these days. I’ll miss having a place to check out items on the shelf before I buy them from Amazon.com.
I’ve been waxing nostalgic since hearing the news. Back in high school, I used to work at the Novi store. Sadly, they paid the same then that they do now — which is to say: they paid really well in 1993, and they don’t pay very well in 2007. Back then, even the cashiers should have been able to tell a customer how to tear apart a computer and put it back together again. For the past few years, if you asked anybody a question there, they’d pick up the box and read it to you as though the idea had never come across your mind.
Oh well. See you in line.
