Things I Learned From MHD

Just recently, DirecTV added MHD to their channel lineup. For those too lazy to click on the link, it’s a hybrid of MTV, VH1, and CMT, all in high definition. For at least three hours a day, they run videos from all three channels.

It brings back a fair amount of nostalgia from early 80′s MTV, when you were rarely more than 10 minutes away from Billy Idol, and you’d willingly watch a Juice Newton video because… hey… it’s a new video, and it isn’t White Wedding. You see, there aren’t many HD videos available. Or if there are, MHD doesn’t seem to be aware of it.

In any case, I’ve learned some new things, and thought I would share.

* Someone actually remade a Phil Collins song. Okay, it was a Genesis song, but still… Anyway, Disturbed remade Land of Confusion. Apparently they didn’t “get” the Genesis version, which is kind of like not “getting” how to shit your pants.

Click here if you want to see this shit.

* Mary J. Blige apparently released albums after “What’s The 411?”, and they were decent.

* One Foo Fighters video is more interesting and creative than the sum of videos that come out in the past seven years (excluding Junior Senior)

* Madonna has the cajones to think she’s still relevant, and is still dropping broken Spanish like it’s 1986. In the video for “Sorry”, she wears a green leotard that makes her look like somebody’s 68 year-old grandmother, which she basically is.

* And on that tangent, holy fuck, have you seen L.L. Cool J lately? Yeah, he’s 10 years younger than Madonna, but he looks 10 years younger than me, except far more ripped. I don’t even know what his song was about, or if it was good. I was too busy thinking “Holy shit, look at L.L. Cool J!”

* Country music videos are really, really, really easy to make. You just need the following:

1) Cowboy hats

2) Tour buses

3) An open field

4) Blonde hair, if you’re a woman / A very nice cowboy hat, if you’re a man.

All pretty incredible stuff, if you ask me.
